Low-Maintenance Naturalistic Garden Design in East Kent – Case Study
The Brief
This low-maintenance naturalistic garden design in East Kent responds to chalk soil conditions, using resilient, wildlife-friendly planting suited to dry, open landscapes.
To design a striking, low-maintenance garden with a naturalistic feel — entirely lawn-free and rooted in its chalk lowland setting. The site lies in a dry valley framed by steep chalk escarpments, giving it a distinctive ecological character and expansive backdrop.
The design was to respond sensitively to this landscape while subtly nodding to the site’s industrial past as a former colliery, through its form, materials, and refined, contemporary planting palette.
The Challenge
The garden was an unusually narrow plot — 50 metres long but only 6 metres wide — and overlooked on both sides. Creating privacy and a sense of spatial variety without resorting to fencing, hedging, or tall trees was essential. The ground itself posed another challenge: chalk soil that was both extremely poor in nutrients and heavily compacted from years of industrial use.
The Solution
Working entirely with soft landscaping, we shaped the garden into three flowing zones defined by planting rather than barriers. A diverse range of ornamental grasses formed the backbone, offering movement, seasonal colour, and a naturalistic rhythm that resonates with the valley setting. Long views to the trees on the escarpment were preserved, anchoring the garden in its wider landscape and drawing the eye outward.
Curved pathways, lightly framed by coppiced Salix and Cotinus, encouraged gentle movement through the space. The drought-tolerant golden grasses introduced height and softness, creating intimacy and subtle screening without blocking light or views. The result is a garden that feels both sheltered and expansive — contemporary yet deeply connected to its chalkland context.
“I have been very lucky to work with Elly on two projects. Having worked with her first time round in my small walled garden, there was no question that when it came to my current garden I would be in safe hands for a second time. I really enjoy the process of working with Elly, she has been able to translate my vision (as a complete novice) on both occasions to reality. Her design skills and knowledge is incredible! Working on my current garden was particularly rewarding as Elly worked in collaboration with a local gardener who did all the planting, together they have created something very special that brings pure joy”
