Coastal Courtyard Garden Design in Walmer, Kent – Case Study

The Brief

This coastal courtyard garden design in Walmer, Kent focuses on low-maintenance, naturalistic planting that reflects the textures and character of the seaside environment.

To shape a low-maintenance, plant-led courtyard with a contemporary coastal spirit — evoking the textures of an urban beach through sculptural planting, pots, and found objects. The space was to feel calm, modern, and elemental: no lawn, no hard landscaping, and planting that would thrive with little care.

The Challenge

The courtyard was covered with large shingle over geotech matting, making conventional planting almost impossible. Every plant had to establish through small hand-cut openings in the membrane, with minimal soil beneath. The site also sat beside a busy road, so both screening and sound-softening were essential. The owner was a complete beginner and wanted a garden that would look after itself.

The Solution

Resilient, architectural species were selected to flourish in dry, root-limited conditions — including grasses and structural perennials that sway gently, blur edges, and soften noise. Planting was threaded directly through the geotech matting, complemented by a restrained palette of pots and vessels that echoed coastal materials and forms.

Layered textures and loose, flowing silhouettes gave the courtyard a sense of quiet enclosure, muffling traffic while creating a modern, coastal mood. The result is a small, immersive outdoor room: simple to care for, rich in atmosphere, and shaped for pause and ease.

“I have been very lucky to work with Elly on two projects. Having worked with her first time round in my small walled garden, there was no question that when it came to my current garden I would be in safe hands for a second time.  I really enjoy the process of working with Elly, she has been able to translate my vision (as a complete novice) on both occasions to reality. Her design skills and knowledge is incredible!  Working on my current garden was particularly rewarding as Elly worked in collaboration with a local gardener who did all the planting, together they have created something very special that brings pure joy.”
