Family Garden Design in Kingston, Kent – Case Study
The Brief
This family garden design in Kingston, Kent focuses on creating a flexible, evolving space using naturalistic, wildlife-friendly planting that grows alongside the owners over time.
The owners wanted a garden that could be created gradually over time, reflecting their love of travel and family life while working within a manageable budget.
They hoped for a space that would grow with them, weaving in memories and inspiration as the garden evolved.
The Challenge
With no complete masterplan in place, the garden needed to remain flexible – developed in stages without losing coherence. Planting had to be chosen carefully to suit the soil and conditions, while also being affordable and aligned with the owners’ tastes. It also had to adapt to children growing up, pets at play, and the changing rhythm of family life.
The Solution
Instead of imposing a fixed layout, the garden has been shaped organically, piece by piece, in close collaboration with the owners. Each new area draws from their holiday memories, creating pockets of character that feel like personal postcards embedded in the landscape.
The planting blends practicality and beauty, balancing colour, texture, and resilience to form a space that is ever-changing yet always true to the family’s story.
“We moved into our new house and had a garden that was a complete blank canvas. We couldn’t afford to do the whole garden so have been planning in sections. Elly has helped us choosing plants and trees that are right for our garden, right for the soil and right for our budget. She also listened to our tastes and helped us with our vision. Elly is kind, calm and patient and goes at your own pace. She also sources the best priced plants and looks for a bargain whilst maintaining quality. We are probably half-way through and can’t wait to plan again! Thanks Elly”
