Low-Maintenance Wildlife-Friendly Planting Design in East Kent – Case Study

The Brief

This low-maintenance planting design in East Kent focuses on creating a resilient, wildlife-friendly scheme that provides year-round interest while remaining practical for a working environment.

The goal was to transform an overlooked, north-facing strip of ground beneath office windows into a beautiful, low-maintenance planting scheme that offered year-round interest — while keeping sightlines across the car park clear for monitoring deliveries and visitor arrivals.

The Challenge

The site presented extremely thin, nutrient-poor chalk soil, with very limited natural light due to the building’s orientation and proximity. The planting needed to remain low and unobtrusive to preserve visibility, while still being engaging and attractive for onlookers.

The Solution

A tiered system of wooden sleepers lifted the planting to eye level, making it visible and enjoyable from inside the office while giving the plants better access to available light. The result is a dynamic, pollinator-friendly scheme that softens the built environment and enhances staff wellbeing. The raised beds also double as an informal break area, allowing employees to pause, pick a strawberry, and enjoy the movement of grasses and insects — bringing nature into an otherwise utilitarian space.
