Wildlife-Friendly Garden Design in Bridge, Kent – Case Study

The Brief

This wildlife-friendly garden design in Bridge, Kent focuses on naturalistic planting and creating a space that evolves beautifully through the seasons.

The clients, a recently retired couple, had just moved into their new home and were creating their first garden together. Their vision was for a space that invited them outdoors, offered colour and scent across the seasons, and provided a sense of privacy from neighbouring sightlines — all while feeling cohesive, characterful, and personal.

The Challenge

The garden had very little topsoil, with solid chalk lying just beneath the surface. This created a challenging starting point for any new planting, requiring careful consideration to ensure long-term success.

The Solution

To overcome the poor soil conditions, deep planting pockets were excavated with a mini digger to a depth of around 80cm and filled with nutrient-rich loam to support healthy growth.

Beneath them, the borders were densely underplanted with a vibrant mix of long-flowering perennials, chosen for their colour harmony, seasonal performance, and textural contrast — bringing the garden to life and encouraging the clients to enjoy it throughout the year.
